Major Zirk Coetsee, one of the soldiers wounded in a shooting spree at Tempe military base in Bloemfontein, died at the Pelonomi Hospital on Wednesday night, SABC radio news reported on Thursday.

Coetsee was injured when Lieutenant Sibusiso Madubela went on a shooting spree at the unit last Thursday, apparently targeting white soldiers. Madubela shot seven people and wounded five others before being shot dead by one of the injured.

Coetsee underwent a lengthy operation after he was shot in the upper body, but his condition deteriorated rapidly on Wednesday.

Another patient, Major Wiehan van Noordwyk, is in a stable condition at Bloemfontein's 3 Military Hospital.

The other three wounded officers have been discharged. -
