The Durex condom company has launched its new Durex Comfort XL condoms, said to be three to four centimetres longer and slightly wider than the standard sizes.

The brand manager of Durex SA, Stuart Roberts, said that they had many requests from South African males complaining that condoms on the market are uncomfortable and tight.

"There is a huge demand for a condom like this in South Africa.

"A large number of South African men are bigger and complain about condoms being too small."

Roberts added that developing new products such as these will help inspire people to enjoy a better and healthier sex life.

A survey conducted by Dr Eduardo Gomez de Diego of the United States found the worldwide average size of the penis to be 14cm during erection.

The South African average was found to be 15,9cm.

Men and women in Durban had different opinions regarding this new condom, some in favour of it and others saying that it just did not matter.

Khulekani Mchunu, from Durban Institute of Technology (DIT) said the condom will be helpful for men with larger penises, but that it could also pose a danger for men who are smaller.

"Men should be aware when buying condoms and should purchase the correct size. It could be dangerous for both people during intercourse if men use an incorrect size condom," he said.

"However, I feel that it is a waste of money because a condom is a condom, regardless of size." he added.

Evelyn Jacob, 22, said she feels that it is excellent that South African men are being catered for.

"During intimacy, it is imperative that the large male be catered for, to ensure comfort and confidence. Men need to feel at ease and protected while performing. This leaves their partners without any doubt. I'm sure that this product will create peace of mind and massive protection - no pun intended," she said.

The larger condoms will be sold in packs of three for R18 and will be available countrywide at leading pharmacies, supermarkets and convenience stores.
