Some of those attending the 17th World Youth Festival in Pretoria on Wednesday packed workshops to share knowledge with their peers, while others, mostly the South Africans, sang and danced outside. Delegates, the majority from foreign countries, deliberated on topics ranging from obstacles to youth struggle, to the manipulation of the media and unemployment.
The latter was packed to capacity. Some delegates resorted to sitting at the entrance, eager to hear what others had to say. According to the International Labour Organisation's Global Employment Trends for Youth 2010, of some 620 million economically active youth aged 15 to 24 years, 81 million were unemployed at the end of 2009 - the highest number ever.
