Top hockey player Craig Fulton was stabbed seven times in a scuffle with an intruder in his home on Wednesday night.

Sister Colleen van Niekerk of the Little Company of Mary hospital in Groenkloof, Pretoria, confirmed that Fulton, 27, who is now stable, was admitted on Wednesday night to intensive care.

Paul Richards, general manager of the South African Hockey Association, said the player and his girlfriend found the intruder in the house and managed to hold him until police arrived. Later, Fulton lost consciousness from the stab wounds.

Fulton plays midfielder and forward for the South African national hockey team. His girlfriend, Natalie Heyn, is a member of the women's national hockey team. Both work as hockey coaches for Pretoria University.

Fulton has represented the country in international matches. He was part of the squad that played in the Sydney 2000 Olympics as well as the Manchester Commonwealth Games earlier this year.
