Samantha Cain, 38, had just put her son on a taxi and was returning home on Tuesday when she was shot by unidentified men on the corner of Wakefield Close and Waterford Street in Connaught Estate.
The mother of three was a member of the Walking Bus child safety project and also supervisor for the Women for Change programme in the area.
Shattered by the news, Ward councillor Beverly van Reenen says Samantha was a voice for change in her community.
“I have known Samantha since my tenure started in 2014. She was a very vocal woman with a beautiful broad smile. She was one of the first people who stepped into my office and demanded change for her community,” Van Reenen says.
