Badih Chaaban, the leader of the New People's Party, has asked the Independent Electoral Commission for a second chance after missing the deadline, the Times reported on Wednesday.

Chaaban missed the deadline to have more than 100 of his candidates registered. Tempers flared at the IEC office in Belville, Cape Town on Friday, at 5pm which was the deadline for political parties to register candidates.

He claimed that he and his daughter were allowed inside the building before 5pm, but when he got to the right office, the IEC provincial head, Courtney Sampson turned him away.

“We have no problems with Mr Sampson. The problem we have is with actual legislation that at exactly 5pm, you cannot accept any more submissions even though we are inside the offices of the IEC before 5pm,” he said. - Sapa
