Cape Town - A 63-year-old man suffered a heart attack and nearly drowned in one of the tanks at the Two Oceans Aquarium on Monday.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) rescuers from the Table Bay branch were summoned to the Two Ocean Aquarium in Waterfront at around 2pm.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said the man was from Joburg.

Lambinon said he was rescued by Two Ocean Aquarium divers and rushed to hospital.

“He is in a serious condition, suffering a myocardial infarction (heart attack) which had reportedly occurred while diving on an adventure dive.”

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old teenager was swept out to sea at Camps Bay after he tried to catch his large kite, which had gone into the water.

NSRI rescuers found Shane Keenan, also from Joburg, entangled in his kite strings and anchored to the sea bed near Maidens Cove.

Rescuers experienced difficulties in getting to him due to a heavy 3.5m breaking waves and 50-knot south-easterly wind. However, he was eventually untangled and brought ashore.

Rescuers were also trying to save a solo sailor who had been sailing from Brazil to Cape Town when his yacht suffered a damaged rudder about 75 nautical miles west of the city. The rescue mission was still under way at the time of going to print.
