Cape Town - A raging fire in Cape Town has moved to Chapman’s Peak Drive where several bungalows at a luxury lodge are burning, the City of Cape Town said on Monday.

Four helicopters were on scene water-bombing the area.

“At the moment the fire has moved towards Chapman’s Peak Drive and subsequently there’s the Tintswalo lodge at the foot of the road where there are numerous bungalows alight,” the City’s Disaster Risk Management spokeswoman Mandy Thomas said.

The fire started on Boyes Drive in Muizenberg, spreading to Ou Kaapse Weg, and reaching Noordhoek in the early hours of Monday morning. Five homes on Silvermine Road in Noordhoek were destroyed.

“From the City’s side, there are about 97 firefighters on scene, along with 28 fire engines and an additional 18 support vehicles. Four helicopters are doing water-bombing,” said Thomas.

At least one fire-fighter sustained burn wounds and has been taken to hospital for treatment.

Several volunteer fire-fighters were also on scene helping to control the blaze.
