Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police is being briefed by the South African Police Services and Committee stakeholders on measures to combat the spate of cash in transit heists which have reached near-epidemic proportions in recent months.

Wednesday's briefing comes a week after Police Minister Bheki Cele held a briefing on the scourge in which he unveiled a number of new measures the police will employ to address the problem. This year, on average, there has been a cash-in-transit heist almost every day - 159 in the past six months, and 13 arrests within the past 24 hours," Cele said.

Cele told the briefing at the National Press Club that “South Africa will be safe again just like in 2010” when cash-in-transit heists were unheard of.
