Cape Town - DA leader Mmusi Maimane was stopped from addressing protesting UCT students on Tuesday afternoon as they booed and chanted for him to leave.

Ahead of his visit the DA tweeted: At 11h30 today, @MmusiMaimane will engage with students at the University of Cape Town to hear their plight. #UCT.

Maimane also fired off a series of tweets supporting the students’ cause. One tweet said: “Privilege can't be perpetuated at varsities by a govt that's denying poor students an opportunity to improve their lives through education.”

But the Twittersphere was scathing in response to his visit to the campus.
