Cape Town - An 82-year-old was rescued with minor injuries after falling on Table Mountain.
Peter Rex and a party of five were hiking up the mountain early on Wednesday when he reportedly slipped and fell on Fountain Ledge.
According to Wilderness Search and Rescue’s Shaheed Osman, Rex fell about 5m.
“It took us 20 minutes to walk down to where he had fallen,” said Osman. “He was conscious the whole time.”
But bad weather marred early attempts to airlift the Kenilworth man. He was finally airlifted to safety just before lunchtime and taken to the Chris Barnard Hospital where he is being treated.
Rex had injured his shoulder and had several cuts on his head. “He should be fine,” said Osman.
Merle Collins, spokeswoman for SANParks, said the Rex and his party had hiked up from the Lower Cable Station and he had fallen while going up a section of the popular mountain trail.
This is the fourth time someone has fallen in the mountain area. On Sunday, father-of-two and member of Pagad’s G-Force, Ebrahim Salie, died after he slipped and fell on Lion’s Head while hiking with his family.
