Man in dock for allegedly defrauding Sars of about R600K

Johannesburg - A 56-year-old man was arrested and appeared in the Bellville Magistrate's Court after he was arrested for fraud, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as the Hawks) said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said that Abdul Karriem Wiener appeared in court on Tuesday for allegedly defrauding the South African Receiver of Revenue (SARS) between 2014 and 2015.

"He allegedly submitted fraudulent income tax returns and received payments totalling approximately R600 000 as a result," Ramovha said.

"The team from the Serious Commercial Crime Unit of the Hawks arrested the suspect on Tuesday at his hideout near Strandfontein following investigations."

Ramovha said that Karriem was facing charges of fraud and was remanded in custody for bail information.

The matter has been adjourned until September 4.
