Cape Town – Sorry ladies, you’ve lost out on the scrum to steal Nizaam Carr’s heart, he’s now a married man.

The 24-year-old rugby star from tied the knot in a traditional Muslim ceremony at the Masjidul Quds in Gatesville on Sunday.

Aa’esha Taliep, 24, is now the new Mrs Carr, and the happy couple spent hours taking pictures across Cape Town before their modest wedding reception, which was held at Oaklands High School hall in Lansdowne on Sunday night.

The couple met about two years ago and it was love at first sight.

Carr, who grew up in Mitchells Plain and now lives in Crawford, couldn’t stop smiling as he told the Daily Voice: “Obviously I feel really blessed and great, it’s the biggest day in my life.”

The usually disciplined sportsman was a little nervous before saying his vows.

“No rugby match, no try, no tackle can be compared to this” said Carr.

“I feel really honoured and special to sit next to my wife now.”

Teammate Scarra Ntubeni and Stormers team manager Chippy Solomons were at the nikaah, along with Carr’s male family and friends.

Taliep’s morning dress was a beautiful green and white creation with a beaded green scarf.

Carr, who made headlines as the first Muslim captain of the Stormers, said rugby will not be taking a back seat now that he’s a “groot getroude man (big married man)”.

In fact, he is certain having a loving wife at home will have a positive effect on his performance on the field.

“I will take it day by day but so far it’s going great,” he joked, minutes after walking out of the mosque.
