Cape Town - The historic St Mark's Church in District Six in Cape Town has been damaged after a protester threw a petrol bomb at the 150-year-old building amid continued unrest at the nearby Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
While the church was not completely gutted, significant damage was reported.
"The Anglican Diocese of Cape Town is dismayed at the petrol-bombing of St Mark's Church, District Six, a church which played a pivotal role in the struggle for justice and freedom," the diocese said in a statement.

"A fire partially damaged the Undercroft on 27th September 2017. The incident occurred around 16h00, when unknown persons gained access to the Undercroft and petrol bombed the building. Police are currently investigating and one arrest has been made."
The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) also condemned the incident.

CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley there was also an arson attack at an engineering building on campus. Protesters started small fires, she said, but firefighters were on scene to extinguish the blazes.
