Police couple killed in head-on collision

Cape Town - A pall of gloom hung over the police station in Robertson where officers were in mourning following the deaths of two of their colleagues - a husband and wife - killed in a head-on collision on the R60 outside Worcester in the Western Cape.

The collision happened in the early hours of on Saturday.

“We are in total and utter shock,” said Robertson police spokeswoman Cynthia Ndabeni.

Sergeant Ashley October, 37, and his wife, Beverley, 35 also a sergeant, died about 3am when their car collided head on with another vehicle.

Their car went down an embankment and into a river as a result of the collision.

“All of our members have visited the families to pay their respects and I can tell you, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” Ndabeni said.

The couple have two sons aged 11 and 15.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said there was nothing that paramedics could do for them.

The couple were declared dead on the scene by paramedics.

Ndabeni said the Octobers were on their way home from Worcester to Robertson when tragedy struck.

The driver of the other vehicle was seriously injured while a passenger in that car was killed, ER24 reported.
