A 10km walk that attracted more than 17 000 people to do their bit for charity was marred by the death of a 70-year-old Salt River woman on Sunday.

Janap Ally was walking with a neighbour when she collapsed a short distance from the start of the walk at Green Point Stadium.

"Paramedics rushed to Ally's aid and she was immediately taken to Somerset Hospital but by the time she arrived there she had already passed away," said Mahmood Sanglay of the race's organising committee.

He said they were still waiting for an official report on the cause of death.

"We offer our condolences to Ms Ally's family. She spent her last moments contributing to a good cause," he said.
