London - Could some people become obese simply because of a heightened sense of smell?

Researchers from the University of Portsmouth have found that obese people are more sensitive to many smells, including chocolate, than people of normal weight.

Forty obese and non-obese men and women took part in smell and taste tests and the results show the obese people rated the chocolate odour as more pleasant and scored higher on sensitivity tests to the high-calorie food smells.

The more overweight they were, the more the sensitivity increased.

It’s thought that obesity could lead to changes inthe brain areas that handle smell.
