Cape Town - Top detective Piet Byleveld is no longer probing the murder of Inge Lotz after taking on a commission from her parents in March last year.

Lawyer Johan Jordaan said on behalf of the Lotzs it had been mutually agreed that  Byleveld’s mandate end.

He said Lotz’s father, Professor Jan Lotz, had expressed his thanks to Byleveld.

Byleveld initially said he was “excited” about his investigation and that it seemed Lotz had been murdered by “a trusted friend”.

On Sunday, police said the Lotz murder was still being investigated and there were loose ends in the investigation – one being the identities of two young white women at the scene on the night of the killing.

The investigating officer in the case, Mike Barkhuizen, on Sunday made a fresh appeal for anyone with any information about the two women, who had been dressed in black, to come forward.

Lotz, 22 at the time and a Maties student, was found bludgeoned to death in her Stellenbosch flat on March 16, 2005.

A few months after her murder, Fred van der Vyver, her boyfriend, was arrested and stood a lengthy trial, but was later acquitted. After Van Der Vyver’s acquittal, police launched a reinvestigation into Lotz’s murder.

Anyone with information about the two women who were at the scene on the evening that Lotz was murdered has been asked to contact Barkhuizen at 082 411 2142.
