Johannesburg - While the month of August has focused on celebrating and elevating women, the month has also been used to highlight some of the struggles women continue to face in today's society. 

Among those struggles is the battle women continue to wage against domestic abuse incidents, some made doubly hard by the fact that they've played out in the public eye. 

From revealing all in autobiographies to emotional interviews on the matter, below is a list of well-known figures who've opened up about their struggles with domestic abuse.

1) Bonang Matheba

Topping the list is media personality Bonang Matheba, who had recently opened up on her struggle with domestic abuse in her new book. 

Before dating rapper AKA, Matheba was in a relationship with 5FM DJ Themba Nkosi, better known as Euphonik, and during the relationship, allegations of domestic abuse came to light after Matheba opened a case of assault against him. 

He appeared in court a few times but Matheba since withdrew the charges against him. 

2) Busisiwe "Cici" Twala

Another celebrity who's abuse struggles recently came to the surface is singer Cici, born Busisiwe Twala. 

Last month, Cici sent shockwaves throughout Mzansi when she revealed injuries she sustained in an altercation with former beau Arthur Mafokate. 

According to media reports, Mafokate allegedly dragged Cici into the street during a heated argument. 

The local stars have since laid charges against each other. Mafokate's legal team reportedly wanted to mediate out of court, but Cici wants the matter handled in court.

3) Letoya Makhene

Letoya Makhene has opened up about her domestic abuse experience. The Generations: The Legacy actress, in an interview, opened up about her divorce from her husband of nine years, Privilege Mangezi and the abuse she endured during the marriage. 

In an interview with True Love magazine, Makhene detailed how losing his job made her ex-husband insecure and abusive towards her. 

The actress has since found love and is currently expecting her fourth child. 

4) Kelly Khumalo

Another notable personality who's spoken out on her experience with domestic abuse is songstress Kelly Khumalo. 

Khumalo, who's been linked to a number of celebrities including slain soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, opened up about her tumultuous her relationship with father of her eldest child, Jub Jub, in an MTV Base interview, alleging he was abusive towards her.

She also detailed how toxic the relationship with Jub Jub was and also spoke out on her struggle with drug abuse. 

5) Rihanna

Barbadian-born international artist, Rihanna, is another celebrity whose struggle with domestic abuse has been well documented. 

The Umbrella hitmaker's struggles came to light when a picture emerged of her with battered face following an altercation with then-boyfriend, Chris Brown. 

The incident happened at the pre-Grammys Clive Davis party in 2009 and resulted in Brown being charged and convicted on assault charges. 

6) Nigella Lawson

Renowned celebrity chef Nigella Lawson is a notable woman who's been a victim of domestic abuse. 

Lawson, regarded as the queen of food porn, made headlines when photos emerged of her ex-husband, Charles Saatchi, throttling her at a restaurant in the UK. 

The images caused an outrage globally and revealed a dark side to the pair's 10 year marriage, with Lawson revealing that the altercation was a result of a discussion on grandchildren. 

8) Halle Berry

A powerful woman who has also experienced abuse at the hands of a partner is Hollywood actress, Halle Berry. 

The Oscar-winning actress has been vocal about her experience, revealing in an interview with People magazine that an ex-boyfriend hit her so hard, her eardrum punctured and she lost 80% of her hearing. 

Berry has never named her alleged abuser, but revealed that it was the first and last time such an incident happened.

8) Khanyi Mbau

Last on the list of women who've been vocal about their struggle with domestic abuse is TV and radio personality, Khanyisile Mbau. 

Mbau, who's known for her glamorous life, has spoken out on her experience with domestic abuse, revealing that her ex-husband, Mandla Mthembu, used to abuse her. 

Mbau revealed in her book, B*tch Please! I'm Khanyi Mbau, how Mthembu used her as a trophy, while she used him as a bank. Mbau was only 19 at the time of the marriage.
