Cape Town - South Africa’s ruling African National Congress has condemned the “senseless” twin bombings at the Boston Marathon in the United States.

“The ANC condemns the... dastardly act of terrorism that happened in Boston. There can be no justification for such a despicable attack... and it deserves to be condemned by the world community,” said a statement released by party spokesperson Jackson Mthembu.

Two South Africans were injured in the blasts. Twenty-six South African citizens had taken part in the race.

Mthembu praised the Department of International Relations and Co-operation for assisting the injured.

“We call on the government of the United States of America to do everything in its power to bring to book those that are responsible... We also call on the world community under the auspices of the United Nations to join hands in the fight against terrorism,” he said.

Three people were killed and more than 100 others were wounded when explosive devices packed with ball bearings detonated within 13 seconds of each other at the finish line of the marathon.

“We extend condolences to the families of the deceased and wish speedy recovery to the injured,” Mthembu said. - IOL
