Russe - A television journalist was raped and murdered in the Bulgarian city of Ruse, local media reported on Sunday.

Police are investigating to establish whether there was any political motive in the killing of Viktoria Marinova, state broadcaster BNT reported citing prosecutors in the northern city.

Marinova was a presenter with the TVN broadcaster for the show "Detektor." In the latest episode, investigative journalists from Bulgaria and Romania spoke about their research into alleged corruption involving EU development funds.

The 30-year-old journalist's body was reportedly found in a park on the banks of the Danube on Saturday. She had been beaten, raped and strangled, according to local media.

Bulgarian Interior Minister Mladen Marinov confirmed the rape and killing.

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said that the country's best investigators have been put on the case.
