Srinagar, Kashmir -

Authorities were trying to evacuate areas of India-administered Kashmir on Monday due to flooding from heavy rains at the weekend.

Hundreds of people moved to higher ground and schools and markets were closed as the Jhelum River rose above the danger mark in state capital Srinagar.

“All our ministers and officials are out in the city to provide relief to people. We will compensate people who have suffered losses due to the floods,” state Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said.

Broadcaster NDTV reported that at least a dozen people were feared buried after three houses collapsed in the rains in Budgam district.

The Meteorological Department forecast more rain in the region for the next six days.
