Washington - Former US president George HW Bush died Friday at age 94, his office said.

His son, former president George W Bush said in a statement his father was "a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for."

Bush had been in frail health for years, and his death follows that of his wife of 73 years, Barbara, who died in April.

Bush served as president from 1989 to 1993.
