Bristol, England - Three people were jailed on Friday after they broke into a crypt, stole bones from a 15-year-old corpse, made a necklace out of vertebrae and posed "Hamlet-style" for photos.

The court in Bristol, western England, was told the three ransacked the old crypt containing 34 bodies at a run-down cemetery in the city.

They were caught after security staff at a shopping centre discovered a set of photographs of one of the three, a 17-year-old, posing with the skull from one body.

It recalls the scene in William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" where the principal character picks up the skull of the court jester and says: "Alas, poor Yorick, I knew him well."

Other snaps were found of the group enjoying themselves in the crypt.

Maxine Burridge, 38, was jailed for 12 months and the youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a juvenile detention order for 10 months.

Simon Gibson, 21, the ringleader, was jailed for 18 months.

The judge was told Gibson suffered from Asperger's Syndrome, which involves a fascination with death and an inability to appreciate people's sensitivities to his actions.

Judge Simon Darwall-Smith said their actions were "offensive to the public and disrespectful of the deceased" and he had little choice but to impose jail terms.

All three had admitted at a previous hearing the offence of disinterring a body, plus other offences relating to a number of incidents at the cemetery in April and May this year. - Sapa-AFP
