Washington - Former US president Barack Obama says he supports

the protests against President Donald Trump's immigration order.

Weighing in publicly for the first time since leaving office on

January 20, Obama says he is "heartened by the level of engagement,"

according to a statement quoting Obama's spokesman Kevin Lewis.

Lewis said Obama "fundamentally disagrees with the notion of

discriminating against individuals because of their faith or

religion."

He also rejects Trump's claim that his policy is similar to what

Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six

months.
