Madrid - A suburban train derailed in Spain's northern Basque Country on Thursday, killing the driver and injuring three passengers, regional authorities said.

The accident in the town of Lezama occurred when the train hit the buffer at the end of the line for reasons that were not immediately clear, a spokesman for the Basque interior ministry said.

One of three passengers injured was in serious condition, the spokesman said. He was unable to say how many people were on the train.

The accident occurred hours after a bomb alert attributed to the ETA separatist group halted rail traffic on another line in the Basque Country.

No bombs were found and traffic resumed after about four hours. - Sapa-AFP
