Sydney - A Malaysia Airlines pilot was charged in a Sydney court on Thursday over the alleged importation of illicit drugs into Australia.

Thiagu Supramaniam, 30, was arrested after his bags were searched at Sydney Airport on Tuesday.

Federal Police said the Malaysian citizen had piloted a commercial flight from Malaysia with 5 kilograms of methamphetamines concealed in six packages inside his suitcase.

Police said they had been tracking Supramaniam since August 7 when he allegedly brought 1.4 kilograms of heroin to Sydney from Malaysia and delivered it to a 38-year-old man at a Sydney hotel, who was later arrested.

Supramaniam did not apply for bail and it was officially refused. He has been ordered to face court again next week.

The maximum penalty for the offences is life imprisonment. - Sapa-dpa
