Thousands are flocking to the Aida refugee camp near Bethlehem to catch a glimpse of a baby that is being hailed as a "miracle" by Palestinians.

The 11-day-old nephew of a Hamas militant killed by Israeli troops is said to have a birthmark resembling his uncle's name, written in Arabic, on his cheek.

The baby's uncle, Ala Ayyad, 25, was shot dead eight months ago after allegedly planning a suicide bombing that killed 12 people on a Jerusalem bus in November 2002.

The special undercover Border Police unit planned an ambush on March 25 that not only killed Ayyad, but also two other civilians, including a 10-year-old girl.

The baby has been named in honour his uncle, who many Palestinians have hailed as a martyr. Little Ala is also said to have been born on Laylat Al-Qadr which is the 27th day of the holy month of Ramadan and is revered as the night when the Qu'ran was revealed to the prophet Mohammad.

The Muslim clerics has declared the 10mm birthmark a "gift from God" and announced the phenomenon on mosque loudspeakers..

Local Christians preparing for Christmas, who acknowledge the Palestinian town as the birthplace of Jesus, have dismissed it as having no significance.

The boys family says about seven thousand people have visited them since the story of his birth was spread via word of mouth.

The child's father, Iyyad Hassan, said: "God rewarded us after we had lost my brother

"He was born at a blessed night and I pray that he would be a good son," he said.

The baby's grandmother, Aysha Ayyad, was the first to notice the mark which she say resembled a flower.

"Just as Mary received a sign from Allah that Jesus would be born to her in this holy place, so we have received a sign from Allah. This miracle shows that the martyrs who fall fighting for Allah do not die." the grandmother said.

"This supports the idea of becoming a martyr. But we want peace. I hope Ala will have a good life."

"I want to tell Sharon that although he goes on slaying our sons, their names are carved on our hearts and the flesh of their sons." she added, referring to Israeli President Ariel Sharon.
