South Africa returned from the IAAF World Championships in Doha with their worst performance since the Osaka 2007 edition without a single medal to show for their efforts.
The team did not feature on the medals table representing a drastic slide from the lofty heights they reached two years ago at the London World Championships.
South Africa finished 20th on the placing table which is 10 spots lower than fat the previous edition in 2017. The placing table awards points to athletes of each nation in a sliding scale according to their placing in the finals of the different events at the world championships.
This is not the worst performance of the last decade with the Moscow 2013 ranking two places lower despite Johan Cronje’s lonely bronze medal. South Africa’s worst performance on the pacing table came at the Helsinki 2005 championships where the country finished 50th.
The London World Championships was the country’s best-ever medal haul at the biennial showpiece courtesy of the three gold, a silver and two bronze.
