Proteas captain Faf du Plessis says that current England bowling coach Ottis Gibson has been recommended by the Cricket South Africa coaching selection panel to be the new head coach of South Africa.

Du Plessis made the announcement at an arrival press conference in Cape Town on Thursday following the lengthy tour of England.

The Cricket South Africa coaching selection panel comprises Norman Arendse, Rihan Richards, Oupa Nkagisang, Gary Kirsten and Eric Simons.

Current Proteas coach Russell Domingo's contract with CSA has come to an end, and Du Plessis already said before leaving England that he spoke to some of the opposition players to find out more about Gibson, should he take over from Domingo.

Following what turned out to be a disastrous tour of England, with defeats in the Test, ODI and T20 series, as well as the failure to win the ICC Champions Trophy, Domingo is unlikely to hold on his post, despite having reapplied for it.
