Spotlight now on players' contracts

The United Cricket Board general council will consider the names of 21 players for national contracts for the 2002/2003 season.

The council will consider the extended list before announcing the names next week, but it is believed they may want to reduce the number by two. Last year 19 players were offered fulltime contracts.

However, the naming of the training squad for next year's World Cup has been delayed as it was felt by some members of the panel that announcing the names for that squad at this stage may be slightly premature.

The United Cricket Board had hoped to have the names of between 25 and 30 players known this week so that the players could start winter preparations ahead of the new season.

It was felt by some members of the panel that more consultation was needed before they could make "valid selections".

It was also felt that very little would be achieved by announcing the names so soon, thereby raising expectations among the players as well as the public.

The announcements of the squads for the one-day tournaments in Morocco and Sri Lanka have also been delayed, primarily to give the selectors more time to finalise the squads.

South Africa play a triangular tournament involving Sri Lanka and Pakistan at the end of August in the north African country as part of a drive to market the game throughout the continent.

The biennial ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka brings together all 10 Test playing nations.

The previous two tournament were held on a knockout format, but on this occasion the sides will be divided into two pools. South Africa open the event with a match against the West Indies.

The controversial captaincy issue has also not yet been resolved.

And while convener of selectors Omar Henry would like to see Jonty Rhodes at the helm - of the one-day squad at least - the veteran middle order batsmen's remarks on Wednesday may have dashed Henry's hopes.
