Netballers taste victory

The South African netball team beat hosts Jamaica 51-41 in their first match of the Tri-nations tournament in the Caribbean which took place on Wednesday (SA time).

The win by the ninth ranked South Africa over the fifth-ranked Jamaicans comes hard on the heels of the recent 3-0 clean sweep over Barbados in Cape Town.

South Africa, under coach Carin Strauss proved too strong for Jamaica, who had beaten Trinidad and Tobago 59-30 in the opening fixture.

The Proteas led their Caribbean counterparts in each quarter of the match played in St Andrew.

The result will give the Proteas a confidence boost ahead of their second match, against Trinidad and Tobago, scheduled for later on Thursday with the final between the two top teams scheduled for Friday (SA time).

SA team: Liezel Wium (captain), Precious Mthembu (vice captain), Tsakane Mbewe, Erin Burger, Claudia Basson, Zanele Mdodane, Amanda Mynhardt, Mary Ngwenya, Nontle Gwavu, Simone van Heerden, Refiloe Mochaka and Zukelwa Cwaba.
