Women's hockey in this country is usually overshadowed by their male counterparts, but they are hoping to steal the spotlight by hosting the Champions Challenge in Randburg next year, writes Marisa Beeton.

The South African Hockey Association (Saha) on Tuesday received news that their bid to host the international event has been successful.

The Women's Champions Challenge, which serves as a qualifying tournament for the Champions Trophy, was due to take place in India next month, but the International Hockey Federation decided to move it because of growing tensions in the region.

South Africa will host England, Germany, India, Korea and the United States at the Randburg Hockey Stadium on February 9-17.

Saha general manager Paul Richards said they were still negotiating with possible sponsors.
