CAPE TOWN – South Africa star sprint duo Akani Simbine (10.03) and Henricho Bruintjies (10.17) rounded off Mzansi's Day 5 Commonwealth Games campaign with a glorious gold-silver finish in the men's 100m final on Monday.
In the absence of the now-retired Usain Bolt, his countryman Yohan Blake (10.19) was expected to claim the honours in athletics' blue ribband event but on the day the South Africans reduced his status to a bronze medallist.
Simbine's gold pushed up SA's medal tally to 18 at the end on Monday's competition.
Earlier on Monday, South Africa's swimmers Cameron van der Burgh (50 metres breaststroke), Chad le Clos (100m butterfly) and
Tatjana Schoenmaker (breaststroke 100m) all claimed gold in the pool.
Le Clos' gold meant that he had clinched the butterfly treble and with it came his 16th Commonwealth Games medal.
