Yokohama, Japan – Paolo Guerrero scored the only goal of the match to give Brazilian club Corinthians a 1-0 victory against Chelsea to win the World Club Cup for the second time in their history.

The Peruvian international made the most of a fortunate bounce after Gary Cahill blocked a Danilo shot in the 69th minute and Guerrero was fastest to react and headed home.

Chelsea should have equalised with a minute to go as Fernando Torres found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Cassio did well to block the shot with his leg.

The Champions League winners had the ball in the back of the net in injury time from Torres, but the referee adjudged the Spaniard to have been offside.

Corinthians, who won the World Club Cup in 2000, are the first South American club to win the competition since 2006.

Earlier Mexican club Monterrey became only the second Mexican team in history to finish third in the competition when they beat African champions Al Ahly 2-0 in the play-off match. – Sapa-dpa
