MADRID - UEFA announced on Thursday that Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal will miss the holder's Champions League last-16 first leg tie after issuing a two game ban for appearing to deliberately pick up a booking.

Carvajal was shown a yellow card in the 90th minute for time wasting in the club's 6-0 win over APOEL Nicosia on Nov. 21.

As it was the full back's third in that phase of the competition it ruled him out of Wednesday's 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund, but in theory would have meant he was available for the round of 16 next February without the risk of further suspension.

However, UEFA announced that their Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) found that Carvajal had breached Article 15 of the Disciplinary Regulations.

“The CEDB has decided to suspend the Real Madrid CF player Dani Carvajal for two UEFA competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible,” a statement said.

“Given that the Real Madrid player Dani Carvajal did not participate in the match Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund played on 6 December 2017, the player still has to serve one UEFA competition match for which he would be otherwise eligible.”
