Durban - South African football legend Neil Tovey’s condition has improved slightly following a heart attack he suffered while training in Durban on Sunday.

“There is a slight improvement from Sunday’s situation but Neil remains in critical condition and I ask all South Africans to keep Neil in their daily prayers. The doctors have been working round the clock and we hope for the best,” his brother Mark Tovey said.

This was the second time since February 2015 that Tovey, 54, suffered a heart attack while participating in a sporting activity.

SAFA chief executive Dennis Mumble, who visited Durban on Sunday to monitor Tovey’s condition, said it was important for football fans and all South Africans to pray for the country’s football legend at this critical time.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana defender remains an iconic figure for leading South Africa to the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations title, the country’s main continental accolade.

Messages of support and prayer have been expressed through social media by various sports personalities, and some of the clubs Tovey coached, AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns.
