Steenberg United joined Mother City neighbours Ubuntu Cape Town and Cape Town City in the round of last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after a comfortable 3-1 win over Orbit College FC at Parow Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Cape Second Division side was seldom in trouble against their North West counterparts, with coach Mike Lukhubeni’s young brigade producing a solid performance to see them through to the next round of the competition.

Steenberg made their intentions clear right from the start when Damien Basadien hit the cross bar. The Second Division team’s early pressure then paid off in the ninth minute when Basadien delivered the cross and Mika-iel Hendricks was at hand to steer in the header. Five minutes before half-time, it was 2-0 to the Capetonians via a goal from Waseem George.

With a two-goal advantage, Steenberg made sure they kept things tight, not allowing the opposition to find a way back into the contest. Fifteen minutes before the close, the Cape side could have increased their advantage, but Dimetreturlo Fredericks hit the upright.

Steenberg brought on Robin Rhoda in the 60th minute to add a bit more bite to the attack, and the experienced forward played his part with a fine assist in creating the opening for Hendricks to make the score 3-0 in the 76th minute.

Orbit then pulled a goal back through substitute Katleho Motsoikha – but it was all a little too late for the visitors.

So a fantastic result for the Capetonians, who are certainly having a good time of it of late. They are in a strong position for promotion, in second position on the Second Division standings, and now they are in the Nedbank Cup spotlight as well.
