JOHANNESBURG - StarSat and the Bundesliga have announced that Jay-Jay Okocha, a Bundesliga legend and African football icon, is to visit Johannesburg from March 15-18 as part of the StarSat & Bundesliga Legends Tour to South Africa.
Okocha will be on a four-day tour to promote the league and interact with African football fans.
Okocha, an Olympic gold medal and Africa Cup of Nations winner with Nigeria, played for Bundesliga club SG Eintracht Frankfurt.
He will answer questions from the media at a press conference, appear as a guest pundit in a TV studio show, and take part in various interactive activities such as the FB live-chat with football fans, a viewing party to watch Bundesliga matches, and communication with youth players.
Okocha is widely regarded as the best Nigerian player of his generation and one of the greatest African players of all time. In the Bundesliga, his career took off when he joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 1992 and he played for four years there.
During his Bundesliga career, Okocha scored a famous goal for Frankfurt against Karlsruher SC, beating legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn on August 31, 1993.
Fans remember seeing him coming on as a second-half substitute. He dribbled past the entire defence, including Khan, before slotting the ball into the net to make it 3-1 for his team. The goal was voted by a myriad of football magazines as the goal of the season.
“We are very excited that we can bring Jay-Jay Okocha to South Africa and I believe that football fans will enjoy the wonderful Bundesliga matches together with the legend,” said StarSat CEO John Yan.
“As the Bundesliga’s official broadcaster in South Africa, StarSat will continue to offer the best matches of FC Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and the other Bundesliga clubs on our sports channels in the coming days.”
