JOHANNESBURG – Kgothatso Montjane is Gauteng’s reigning, fan favourite athlete after she won the Sport Personality of the Year award at the provincial ceremony on Sunday.

Montjane’s recognition was endorsed by the public through an SMS voting line.

And, what made the victory sweeter is that she’s a disabled tennis player who was up against able-bodied athletes.

It’s been a good year for Montjane, who recently participated in the US Open.

The SA No 1 wheelchair tennis player has endured a memorable couple of weeks, especially after receiving a R1.5 million backing from 10 sponsors.

Although Khethiwe Zulu, wheelchair basketball player, beat her to the Sportswoman of the Year with a Disability award, she’s still hoping to reach the heights the 32-year-old tennis star has attained.

“I am hoping that one day, maybe, I’ll follow in her footsteps,” Zulu said.

“Maybe I could even do more than her. We used to play basketball together a long time ago.”
