Former Wimbledon singles finalist Kevin Curren was on Thursday confirmed as the new non-playing captain of the South African Davis Cup squad.

Curren, who lost to a 17-year-old Boris Becker in the 1985 Wimbledon final, replaces a "frustrated" Craig Tiley, whose contract expires at the end of the year.

The SA Tennis Association (Sata) also disclosed on Thursday that one-time top WTA Tour player Mariaan de Swardt, whose playing career has been dogged by serious injuries, had been appointed to replace Australia-based Charlton Eagle as captain of the SA women's Fed Cup squad.

Sata's chairman of the Davis and Fed Cup committee Dr Malcolm Hayward said they were fortunate to have had the calibre of applicants who responded to the advertisements for the posts.

Hayward said a major influence on his committee's decision to appoint Durbanite Curren was the need to have a locally-based captain, who had to be able to "amplify his role by developing and nurturing young talent for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens".

Hayward also said that De Swardt had the makings of an "excellent leader" for the Fed Cup team.

South Africa's next Davis Cup encounter is an away tie against Yugoslavia in May, while the Fed Cup qualifying tournament will be held in Pretoria in April.

Tiley said: "It has always been with great frustration that I had to deal with Sata. Unfortunately, the incompetence will not change unless there is an organisational overhaul."
