An incident of a poisoning is said to have occurred at the ANC North West Provincial Elective Conference where one delegate fell sick and had to exit the conference. The delegate, a male aged 42, left delegates in fear that there was poisoning of food at the conference venue.

The highly contested conference was interdicted by the Mahikeng High Court on Friday after some delegates exposed members of the Interim Provincial Committee of installing themselves as voting delegates. The Interim structure, overseen by the party’s National Executive Committee was put in place to lead the province to an election.

The conference has been postponed several times, which forced the provincial leadership to miss the July deadline set down by the national office of the ANC, due to disputes in all four regions of the province.

Accusations of poisoning have often rampaged the ANC’s political battles.

Inside the conference the mood is tense with all commission closed for the media.

A highly placed source told the The Star’s sister publication the Daily News, that ANC Eastern Cape Chairperson Oscar Mabuyane escaped death at the hands of some of his comrades who poisoned him at the elective conference.

He said Mabuyane and his team decided to keep the information away from the public.

“He is recovering from home; it was really bad but he will survive. It appears that some comrades are not happy with him. That is why he has not been seen since the conference, they almost took him out.”

The forerunners for the position of chairperson are former premier Supra Mahumapelo and current MEC for finance Motlalepula Rosho.
