Women dressed to the nines, gathered for a day of laughter, cocktails and empowerment at The Star and Moja Love’s Women’s Day event on Saturday.

More than 300 women braved the chilly Saturday morning to attend The Star and local channel Moja Love’s “The Choice is Yours” women’s event at Altitude Beach in Fourways. The guests gathered at the lavish event to celebrate women and engage in issues affecting women in South African society.

The guests, who were beautifully and colourfully dressed, gathered at the luxurious venue where they were provided with food, drinks and goodie bags and were able to have their pictures professionally taken by The Star’s photographers.

Radio and TV personality Dineo Ranaka dazzled the crowd as the master of ceremonies with a cream two-piece power suit and kept the crowd going with her personality and brutal honesty on women’s issues.

Moja Love acting head of channel Bokani Moyo opened the day with a speech about how they did not know the channel would grow so quickly when it was launched, but it was a slow start.

“We decided to do content that focused on women. The reason we did that is because our team at Moja is about 90% women and it’s a channel for women by women,” Moyo said.

She added that the channel hoped that by continuing to have content that challenged the status quo there would be discussions to solve the issues.

“Until every issue is confronted in each and every family in South Africa, we will continue to broadcast the content we do because we represent communities that were previously marginalised and we talk about love and the issues that come with love,” Moyo said.

The Star editor Sifiso Mahlangu said the event was important for the publication because it celebrated black women.

“We write the news and know about all that is bad for black women. We know that everyday women are raped and murdered in this country but we also tell the good news.

“It’s good for you to celebrate, relax and enjoy this day because you are wonderful, beautiful and we appreciate you,” Mahlangu said.

The beach-inspired set up saw lawyer Kelebogile Motjale host an important discussion about women’s legal rights in regard to abusive relationships, marriages, divorces, wills and estates.

Local celebrity gynaecologist Dr Mpume Zende gave a sex talk about women exploring their bodies to achieve satisfaction and intimate toys.

The guests were almost falling over each other to have a palm reading from Moja Love talent Mogomotsi Magwai, also known as Mogomotsi The Palmist, who gave about four lucky guests a live palm reading and Mpho Entle, a medium, who conducted readings with one guest.

Uyajola 9/9 presenter Jub Jub’s entrance to the event also caused a stir as he pretended to confront a couple who were in attendance.

Three fortunate women walked away with vouchers worth R10 000 from Altitude Beach. The other guests did not leave empty handed and were given goodie hampers.
