Music powerhouse and afro-soul singer Malakhiwe “KhiweG” Grootboom makes a return with a divine single titled Thongo Mamela alongside music star Lusi to unpack African spirituality.

With the song rooted in the significance of appreciating ancestral music, KhiweG says its essence is to remind people that the spiritual side is always there, particularly as a black African.

While for some people, the discourse around spirituality may still be complex, the song further explains that it is quite normal to be in doubt of what you believe in from time to time.

In bringing this song to life, she had hopes that people could prioritise communicating with their ancestors effectively and be frank with their sentiments as well.

In a conversation with The Star, the musician further spoke about the norms that the song challenges.

“It tackles the norms of people being too afraid to speak to their ancestors about things they are not happy about. They are not there for the good times in your life. They are not there because just for show or a flex.

“When you are unhappy about some events that take place in your life, you need to speak to them. Remember, ithongo is someone who was once a living being, and now, they’re spiritual. That does not mean you should shy away from telling them exactly how you feel,” said KhiweG.

Asked about what it meant for people to listen to the song, she said: “It is important for people to appreciate ancestral music as it is an indicator that there is, once again, a different world besides ours and depending on how one views it, it is of our higher selves, higher beings, or our guardians.

“This song is also a reminder that it is okay to be in doubt of what you believe in from time to time. We are human, our lives are roller coasters, and I am sure your people will never shame you for that as they themselves once walked this earth.”

Speaking about what has kept her going on her career path, she mentioned her family and friends, making a highlight that they give her the strength and support she needs.
