Johannesburg - Nazrana Jhavary has achieved outstanding results in her matric examinations, with a full house of eight distinctions.

Jhavary says her election as the 2022 deputy head girl of discipline and organisation, is one of her proudest memories from her time at Kingsmead College.

It is expected that Jhavary will be following in her three sisters’ footsteps after achieving eight distinctions in her matric year. She further appeared on the Independent Examinations Board’s (IEB) outstanding achievement list for achieving within the top 5% in 6 or more subjects and achieving a rating level of 7 in Life Orientation.

Her proud mother, Farha Moosa, said apart from her commendable academic achievements, her daughter, who was deputy head girl of Kingsmead College in 2022, is also good in music after she received a music scholarship in Grade 8.

Aside from her academic excellence throughout her schooling career, Jhavary received the music scholarship to Kingsmead College in Grade 8 and has performed in various competitions such as the Yamaha music competition, the National Eisteddfod Academy, the “Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music”, and the “Online music talent showcase”.

She has achieved her Grade 8 level in music and has performed on various stages, including the Roodepoort Theatre, Linder Auditorium, and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, she said.

Speaking to The Star, Jhavary said she plans to study actuarial science or accounting at Wits University this year.

“My plan is to study actuarial science or accounting science at Wits University, following in the footsteps of my three older sisters, who also studied at Kingsmead College and Wits University,” she said.

She has participated in non-academic activities, including giving back to the community and taking part in charity work and other activities.

Serving in her community are some of the things that she takes pride in. She has dedicated a big chunk of her time to worthy causes such as 67 Blankets for Mandela Day, Hotel Hope, Fight with Insight, Kitty and Puppy Haven, and the JoBerg2C Cycle Challenge Initiative.

Jhavary was awarded the Community Spirit Prize for achieving over 700 hours of service through Community Hours SA during her five years of high school.

"Aside from my deputy head girl duties, I was involved in many facets of Kingsmead College during my high school years. I was selected for the Science Expo in Grade 9, participated in many public speaking competitions and school plays, achieved the Silver President’s award despite the disruptions of Covid for 2 years, and was among the Wits Top 100 applicants this year," she said.

As if that were not enough, Jhavary was also the school’s library monitor, a writer for the school newspaper, a member of the squash team, wind band, and 1st Team Marimba Band, as well as the school orchestra.

During her final assembly, Jhavary was awarded many prizes, including the Dux Proxime Award, the top achiever in accounting, the top achiever in further studies mathematics standard, the top achiever in music, full colours for academics, and a certificate of thanks for leading Kingsmead in an exemplary manner, among others.

“It was wonderful to have the support of all my friends who cheered for me.”

Her advice to the class of 2023, is to take advantage of every opportunity that Kingsmead has to offer. “Appreciate each day and work hard to achieve your school goals,” she said.
