A Soweto woman is expected to appear before Protea Magistrate’s Court today.

The 25-year-old is alleged to have killed her 4-year-old child in Tshiawelo Flats, Soweto, on Monday.

“It is reported that the suspect was noticed by her sister-in-law carrying a plastic bag. When questioned about what was inside the bag, she allegedly informed the sister-in-law that it was the remains of her 4-year-old son that she had killed and burned,” a police spokesperson said.

According to police, the woman handed herself over at the Protea Glen police station. The motive for the killing is not known.

Earlier this year, Unicef South Africa representative Christine Muhigana highlighted the worrying SAPS statistics that showed that 352 children were killed from October to December 2021.

“These statistics do not even tell the full story. Another 394 children survived attempted murder and 2 048 children were victims of physical assault. Each child must now recover from their physical injuries and cope with the mental trauma they suffered as a result,” said Muhigana.

She said the 2021 statistics revealed a decrease of 5.6% in murders compared to the same period in 2020 but attempted murders jumped by 30%.
