Johannesburg - Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has questioned the notion that President Cyril Ramaphosa's presidency heralds a "new dawn" for South Africa.

Malema was speaking on Johannesburg-based online radio station Touch HD.

"We are willing to help our country and the Cabinet is South Africa. When Ramaphosa came in with the rhetoric of "a new dawn". Now we ask ourselves, what is new about Jeff Radebe who has been a minister since 1994?" asks Malema.

Malema says there is a need for young leaders.

"If we say young people can vote, then they must be able to lead. It is hypocrisy to want youth to vote but to not entrust them with leading.

"Ageism is like patriarchy, it's a struggle that's all over the world. Those are some of the phenomenon we need to deal with. Leadership does not come with age. Barack Obama proved this," says Malema.

Malema says political parties must have a succession plan.

"There was no succession plan in the ANC, Angola, Zimbabwe, Mozambique. Once you have a succession plan you're able to continue. The old always get angry when we replace them.

"Liberation parties and movements self-destruct and are unable to deliver economic freedom beyond political liberation. Our people will not eat votes."

On education, Malema says the ANC led government should have focused on free education instead of proving RDP houses.

"We should have given people free education in 1994 and not RDPs then we would not have a problem of individuals who are heavily dependent on the state," says Malema.

Malema says he is ready for the 2019 elections.
