South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has lauded the Grammy award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir as the finest export the country has had.

Multiple award-winning South African gospel group bagged the Best World Music Album Grammy for their album Freedom at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, at Staples Center in Los Angeles in February.

"You are certainly the most colourful export we have, not just in the clothes, but also the most active export that we have because your name reverberates throughout the world."

Ramaphosa said the choir, which has added a third Grammy to their awards shelf, represented the best the country has to offer.

"You have become extraordinary. You are jovial, dynamic and a valuable export. May you continue to make your nation proud. You are outstanding in what you do."

Ramaphosa said the achievement has rung wonderful bells of great celebration throughout the country.

Together with Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa, Ramaphosa  congratulated the choir at the Market Theatre Square, in Johannesburg this morning.
