Durban - Hundreds of relatives and friends of slain alleged Phoenix 'Bloods gang boss' and tow truck owner Kalvin Periasamy, have gathered at his funeral at Pesco Hall in Phoenix on Saturday morning. A large contingent of police kept a watchful eye on proceedings.

Periasamy, 30, of Umhlanga was shot three times in the Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Thursday. He died at the scene.

Emotions ran high as Periasamy’s customised white and red coffin was carried into the hall.

During the funeral service, mourners lined up to pay their last respects. A video slide was played showcasing pictures of Periasamy with his family, wife and children.

Speculation is rife that the shooting was a hit on Periasamy following the death of another tow-truck driver earlier this year. Periasamy was expected to stand trial along with six co-accused along with his brother Kevin Periasamy and sister-in-law Desiree in July.

They were arrested and detained after police recovered R80 000 worth of drugs and over R90 000 cash in their home in January 2018.

He was out on a bail of R10 000, after he appealed against a bail decision for a separate murder charge in February.
