There is something about Kenya that is truly remarkable. This East Africa offers an Indian Ocean coastline, lakelands, the Great Rift Valley, mountain highlands and is a range of wildlife offerings. Here are 5 facts about the country you need to know:

1. It is believed that Kenya’s name has roots in the Kikuyu term for Mount Kenya, ' Kirinyaga'.

2: Kenya offers some of the most beautiful buildings and tourists sites, including the Fourteen Falls in Thika, which is ranked among the longest and steepest falls in East Africa, and the Crying Stone in Kakamega, a tall stone structure that produces a streak of water that makes it appear like it is crying.

3: The staple meal in Kenya is ugali, a  meal made from either maize, sorghum or millet. It is accompanied by a stew, which former US president Barack Obama enjoyed during his visit to Kenya.

4: The country’s capital city is Nairobi. The city is modern and full of greenery.

5. A visit to Kenya is wasted  if you did not enjoy a safari. Go in search of the ‘Big 9’, which includes the big 5, hippos and select bird species.
